The Ebell of Los Angeles is an educational and philanthropic organization founded by women, for women in 1894. Our mission is to inspire women and build community through arts, culture, education, service and stewardship of our historic campus and collections.

The Ebell supports dozens of non-profits and scholarships, in addition to hosting special events, live music, dinners and community forums. We invite you to join us to discover all the ways you can get involved.

Did you Know?

  • The Ebell was founded by women, for women in 1894.
  • It was created to bring education and arts to women at a time when education was not accessible to most women.
  • The historic Ebell campus and Theatre were built in 1927 and designed by renowned architect, Sumner Hunt.
  • The Ebell campus and Theatre covers 83,000 square feet. The Wilshire Ebell Theatre has over 1200 seats.
  • Judy Garland was “discovered” on our Wilshire Ebell Theatre stage.
  • Amelia Earhart made her last public appearance at the Ebell.
  • The Ebell has been a favorite location for film and media and has been featured in over 50 movies including Forrest Gump, The Artist, The Wedding Crashers, and The Curious Case of Benjamin Buttons.
  • The Ebell Costume Collection has more than 800 pieces dating back to the mid-1800s, lovingly preserved by our members.
  • The RCA Endowment awards yearly grants totaling $120,000 to 10 non-profits that help women and children in need.
  • For 100 years the Ebell Scholarship Endowment has granted more than 5,000 scholarships to local college and university students.
